Rare market-fresh Aesthetic sterling silver water pitcher on stand. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1881. Quadrilateral pitcher with gently curved sides and cast handle in form of elephant head with splayed and stylized ear mounts and lobed trunk. Stand has square well with wide and tapering shoulder and flat rim with curved corners. Engraved tendrils, cattails, blossoming irises, and darting butterflies on butler-finished ground. Low-relief acanthus leaf-and-volute scroll borders and band with cherub charioteers. Reeding and beading. A gorgeous integration of Japonesque and Classical motifs.

Fully marked including maker’s stamp, date letter, and nos. 1040 (pitcher) and C93 (stand). Excellent condition with glowing patina.
