Russian 875 silver novelty cigar box, 1884. Rectangular; cover flat and hinged. Trompe l’oeil wood panels with realistic grain and tax stamps. Gilt interior.

Based on the packaging of H. Upmann, one of the largest makers of Cuban cigars. The firm was established in Havana in 1844. At the turn of the century, it employed 1200 people, and the average annual output was 25 million cigars in more than 200 sizes. They were awarded gold medals at international exhibitions and were exported all over the world, including Russia.
