Large Art Nouveau Craftsman glazed earthenware vase. Made by Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1892. Ovoid with silver bracket handles. Shaded orange chrysanthemums emerging from umbrous brown ground. Overlay in form of dense leafing scrollwork and two pairs of impish tousled-hair cherubs embedded in dense leafing scrollwork.

The artist was Matthew A. Daly (1860-1937), a Cincinnati native who studied at the local design school. After a stint with another pottery, he came to Rookwood in 1883, and worked there until 1903. His work was exhibited at the 1900 Paris world’s fair, and is in several museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Cincinnati Art Museum.

Marks include dated Rookwood stamp, artist’s signature, shape no. 581, size letter C, and clay color letter W. Silver has stamp for Spaulding & Co., a Chicago maker acquired by Gorham in the 1920s, and the no. R181. Good condition.
