This is an exceptional sterling silver tureen by the premier American silversmiths at Tiffany & Co. in a unique American design. Standing on an oval pedestal base trimmed with a band of gadrooning, this tureen has a classic oval body and high domed cover. The body is decorated with two bands of ornament, one with a geometric leaf design and a smaller band of gadrooning below. Two outstanding cast figural ox heads form the tureens side-handles and are depicting with exceptional detail and realism. The domed cover has an elegant bracket-formed oval ring handle with a conforming band of geometric decoration, as well as two beaded bands below. Animal imagery, in this case referencing oxtail soup, was a popular decorative device in the nineteenth century and would have complimented other items on display in the dining room. This unusual decoration, which was the height of fashion, represents Tiffany’s superb taste and craftsmanship. This tureen is in excellent condition and is very heavy gauge silver. It measures approx. 10 1/2” high to the top of the handle, approx. 16” long over the side handles, and approx. 8” wide. It is marked under the base with the maker’s mark of Tiffany & Co., the words English Sterling 925-1000, 550 Broadway, pattern number 878, order number 1088, and two Gothic letter Ms that indicate the piece was made by Edward C. Moore, Tiffany’s leading designer. This striking antique silver tureen is a unique piece that is a true collector’s item. Another example of Tiffany’s superbly crafted and designed American silverware!
