This is a rare and beautiful Rafraichissoir (Cooler), originally coming from Paris and made by the second half of the 19th century during the reign of Napoleon III. This exquisite item is built from solid ebony with inlaid floral patterns made from an intricate combination of rosewood and mahogany veneers. All, beautifully highlighted with bronze pierced galleries and acanthus rosettes with mounts, from the top featuring three removable zinc compartments to the tripod base below. This latter consists of three tapered turned fluted legs connect to each other thanks to a round stretcher providing stability and sturdiness. Today while this lovely item can still be used for its primary purpose, most people used such piece as a planter. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa date 1860-1870.
