Presented here is an old, pre-ban Japanese ivory brooch and earrings set carved in the shape of plumeria flowers in its original faux leather box retaining the seller's guarantee of authenticity. The Sunamoto Ivory Co. was first established in 1884 and were known as carvers of fine ivory netsuke. The design here seems to be identical to similar sets being sold by Ming's of Hawaii, which makes one wonder whether all pieces were in fact produced by the same carvers in Tokyo.
Beautifully carved with hand-painted details in saffron yellow at the center, the set is a warm light ivory color and seems hardly ever worn. The box it is housed in as well as the printed on bamboo-sheet guarantee are in excellent condition.
The brooch measures 1 1/2" in diameter and the earrings are 1"; one of them is marked "JAPAN" on the screwback. I believe the set dates in the 1950s, if not a little earlier.
