Superbly crafted, a ca 1900 Danish skonvirke silver brooch adorned with blue and green jasper signed by Bernhard Hertz, one of the best, early Scandinavian Art Nouveau designers. I am at a loss as to what to talk about first! Skonvirke jewelry has something very magical about it – I don’t know if it’s the softly sculptural beauty each piece has that reminds me of ancient, moss-covered forest floors or the almost pulsating repoussage that embraces the stones in the most ginger, delicate way. Here it is not only the generous size that makes this brooch irresistible, it’s the patina and the wonderful color of the jasper – blue and green for the cabs and dyed dark lapis for the dangle. Measuring 3 1/4″ tall (including the dangle) by 2 7/8″ wide the brooch weighs 28.5 grams
and is fully hallmarked as shown with maker’s initials and “830”. It dates ca 1900 and is in excellent vintage condition with patina to die for, a magical combination of design, color and execution, with no damage or repairs noted; as you can see in one of the photos, the back is inscribed with a previous owner’s name – I left it as a part of the brooch’s history but it’s easily removable, if you don’t want it there.
