In their "mozaico Azteca" jewelry line the Los Castillo primarily combined sterling silver with azur-malachite inlay yet from time to time one stumbles upon a less often encountered piece in which high quality "peacock" abalone was used for the "mosaic". This assembled demi comprised of necklace and earrings fits the last category - and it is perfect in its bare bones approach to design! Both components of the set stride the divide between late Deco and early modernism with their angularity and minimalism, the latter belied just a little by the playfulness of the flat bead adorning each earring. The necklace measures 15 5/8" long (wearable) by 1/2" wide and weighs 52.0 grams. The earrings are 3/4" wide by 5/8" tall and weigh 6.2 grams bringing the set's total weight up to 58.2 grams. All pieces are signed with maker's name and "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO" while the necklace is also marked "MOZAICO AZTECA", des. no 201 and has the Eagle 15 assay mark; the earrings bear des. no 74 and also. The demi dates in the 1940s-50s and is in excellent vintage condition with beautiful abalone inlay in shimmering browns, blues and greens, great patina, no damage and no repairs noted - a fun, comfortable, easy to enjoy set.
