A favorite Mexican Deco jewelry design of mine, the... "hearts of stone" were a phenomenon of the pre-1948 period, at least where the carving itself and the materials used is concerned. True enough, one might come upon "stone heart" jewelry made after 1980 yet the hearts lack the curves of their early counterparts and they are made of "colder" stones like black onyx or even black glass. Nothing like the illusion of depth that dyed calcite brings to the Deco hearts, with its striations and the almost "ombre" effect the color creates as it penetrates the stone. Here, the links remind me of crunchy Granny Smith apples, their green skin taking on yellow undertones as they ripen on a stone kitchen counter. The bracelet measures 7 1/2" long (wearable; 8" end to end) by 7/8" wide and weighs 41.8 grams. It is simply marked "SILVER" and "MEXICO" and dates in the pre-1948 period. It is in excellent vintage condition with scrumptiously carved heart links, beautiful color variation in the polished stone, great patina and no damage or repairs noted.
