It is not easy to stumble upon a vintage Los Ballesteros carved "mask" ring but when one does find an example, what a feast it is! There is nothing "timid" about this piece. The philosophy here is big, bold and beautiful and I believe that the Los Ballesteros workshop accomplished all this monumentality in the most amazing, masterful, and eye-pleasing way. The "mask" is here carved out of a dark green agate, I believe, with grayish white specs in it. Closed eyes, a slightly curved nose and full lips rest under the weight of an impressive headdress adorned with beading, a row of dimpled dots above the brow and a series of little silver arches at the very top. The ring is currently a sz 7.5 US (resizable by your jeweler) with its face measuring 1 3/8" N-S and 1 1/8" E-W. It has a 3/4" rise and weighs 19.6 grams. It is fully signed with maker's logo as shown as well as "STERLING 925", "HECHO EN MEXICO" and Eagle 47 assay mark. It dates in the 1950s-70s and is in
very good vintage with a beautiful stone and nice carving, impressive presence and great patina; there is no damage or any repairs noted except for a very small nick on the underside of the upper lip; it is not noticeable to the naked eye and does not offend at all.
