An ode to Mexico’s ancient crafts this “tribal” necklace wrought in sterling silver with bone links and agate beads bears the signature of Reveriano (Reveri) Castillo. Though the Castillos did, on occasion, incorporate Aztec and Maya artifacts and beads in their jewelry, I believe that here the materials used are contemporary to the designer but brought together is such a way as to evoke ancient types of personal adornment. Everything here is hand-made, with the help of the most rudimentary equipment. And still, the azur-malachite is so seamlessly laid into the bone, the stone looks as if it has always been an integral part of those links. The necklace measures 17” long (wearable) with its beads being approx, 5/8” in diameter and the bone links approx. 1 1/2” in length. It weighs 64.3 grams and is signed with Reveri’s initials as shown as well as “STERLING TAXCO” and “MEXICO”. It dates in the pre-1948 perio and is in excellent vintage condition with the most amazing patina in the silver beads, seamless, perfect inlay in the bone links, with no damage and no repairs noted - a quite unusual, primordial necklace by one of Taxco’s best first period maestros.
