A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, and in preparing to offer this fantastic find of mine, I am putting my trust in popular wisdom. When one has been dealing in vintage Mexican silver jewelry for as long a time as I have, one tends to hear that little "devil" in one's ear louder and louder, claiming that there is nothing new or exciting left to be encountered. Thankfully though, life and the old maestros of Taxco still keep some aces hidden up their sleeve. The early sterling and carved obsidian "mask" cuff at hand came just in time for my interest in the field to be reinforced and refreshed. I have never seen this design in the specific form before yet I do recall having sold a brooch a while ago in which the figure's arms seemed to connect directly to its head. The design is more dramatic here as ample space allows for layers of overlay, stamping, hand-etching and oxidation, not to mention that mesmerizing, glistening obsidian "mask". Of undisputed collector quality the cuff has a 7 1/2" inner circumference (including the 1 1/4" gap; I would advice against trying to adjust it for fear of damaging the piece) and its width varies between 2 1/2" and 1 1/8". It weighs a whopping 130.7 grams and is simply marked "TAXCO STERLING". It dates in the 1930s-40s and in excellent vintage condition, profusely and masterfully decorated, housing a gorgeous piece of carved golden sheen obsidian, with fantastic patina and no damage or repairs noted.
