I have said in the past that Erika Hult de Corral is one of the few designers in the world of Mexican silver jewelry for whom I will cross the 1980 threshold without second thoughts. I believe that her talent and the quality of her work combined with the fact that she is one of the few known female contributors to the country’s 20th c. Silver Renaissance more than warrants the… “transgression”. Slick, with a footprint that allows it to be enjoyed all year round, the necklace at hand is comprised of an articulated neck ring off which hangs a central station with overlay, cut-work and a half-bar of saturated, rich in striations piece of malachite. And even though Ric is loved and sought after for her modernist jewelry, there is something almost Art Nouveau (should I say … Elvish?) in the way the “wings” flanking the stone station are shaped. The necklace has an inner circumference of 15 1/2” (clasped; easily lengthened with a simple extension) while its central station is 4” wide and with a 1 3/4” drop. It weighs 27.6 grams and is marked with maker’s signature “Ric” in script as shown as well as registration code “TR-26”, “TAXCO” and “MEXICO 925”. It dates in the 1980s and is in excellent vintage condition with saturated, rich color in the stone, slick, eye-catching design, great patina and no damage or repairs noted.
