A Chinese double overlay snuff bottle. 19th century. An opaque white glass bottle is encased in sapphire blue glass and then encased again in white. These two layers are then cleverly carved away to leave a design of an ancient fisherman attended by his young apprentice. Double overlay bottles are uncommon.

The clear glass stopper is not original but it seems to suit the bottle.

Approximately 7.5cm high. Fine condition.

Please study the photographs.

A CHINESE RASPBERRY RED OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE. 19TH CENTURY. .

The white glass bottle cased in a dark strawberry red glass and then ground away on the sides to leave vestigial handles, these too with further engraved decoration. A relatively simple bottle but with a striking colour. Inspection under a loupe shows the surface to have signs of light wear from use. The mouth is finished with a shallow concave surface. The stopper has lost its cork and spoon. It dates from the end of...

A JAPANESE EXPORT DISH, LATE 17TH CENTURY.

This fine dish is decorated with designs taken from Ming Chinese Wanli 'Kraak' wares and came about as a result of a disruption of Chinese production during a period of unrest. Dutch traders who found their Chinese trade stopped resorted to ordering from Japanese makers. The Japanese versions of these Kraak style pieces are usually thicker than the very thin Chinese Kraak wares and this has ensured their survival in often pristine condition. Thi...

RECONNAISSANCE PARTY, THE RELIEF OF CHITRAL, 1895.

The former owner of this fine watercolour painting assured me that although it is unsigned it was by a British military officer, Alan David Greenhill-Gardyne. He was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders in 1888 and was with the Regiment at the Relief of Chitral in 1895. He took part in other North-West Frontier operations and later in the Boer War, he was wounded in the Great War. A talented artist, he exhibited at the Royal Academy...

AN OLD JAPANESE PAINTING OF MONJU BOSATSU.

Monju Bosatsu - Manjushri Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The painting appears to have great age and even though not in the best of condition it still has a compelling presence. It is painted on a composite sheet of thin paper, the joins can be seen as angled lines across the sheet and mounted as a kakemono. The painting is signed with a single seal impression in gold.

The painted area is approximately 106cm by 40.5cm. The painting has ho...

AN ELEGANT CHINESE PAKTONG TOBACCO PIPE, 19THC

The pipe looks a little like yellow brass in some pictures but this is a result of recent tarnishing, perhaps I should have polished it a little before taking the photographs. The base has an engraved inscription. 19th century I suspect. Especially nice is the cloud collar and the subtle shape of the base, almost peach-shape in section.

17.3/4 inches (45cm) high. Fine condition. The conical wall of the base has a slight depr...

A JAPANESE KAISEKI DISH, KYO~YAKI, 19TH CENTURY.

A large stoneware leaf-shaped dish decorated with leaves and fruits in over-glaze blue and green enamels on top of underglaze blue veins. Probably a kaiseki dish for the tea ceremony. Late Edo, 19th century, Kyoto.

9.1/16 inches (23 cm) long, 5.1/2 inches (14 cm) wide. There are three lines from the edge that appear not to be a result of accidental damage but stress after the firing. The foot-rim, which is applied as a separate...

AN UNUSUAL SETO TOKKURI, 19TH CENTURY.

The body covered overall with a persimmon slip beneath the clear glaze, the neck dipped in a thick green glaze. The potter has engraved some fruit/vegetable forms through the slip before glazing, something I’ve never seen before. The orange and green go very well together. Within the foot-rim the body is clear glazed giving the more typical oatmeal colouring associated with Seto stoneware. 19th century.

Approximately 10.3/16 inches (25...

TWO JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS COMMEMORATING FREDERICK STARR & NOSATSU.

Frederick Starr was a professor of anthropology at Chicago University who first visited Japan in 1904 and made many subsequent visits. He wrote many papers on Japanese subjects but is probably best known in Japan for his interest in pilgrimage, he dressed in traditional pilgrim’s clothing and performed the Shikoku pilgrimage in 1917 and 1921. He became fascinated with the tradition of nailing name slips (nosatu) to te...

A JAPANESE MIXED METAL BOX, 19TH CENTURY.

This diminutive oval box is constructed from the two fittings that normally grace the hilt of a samurai sword, known together as fuchi kashira. The fuchi is the part that fits the hilt next to the hand guard, tsuba, and in this example is iron with soft metal geese and wind-blown grasses. The work is exceptional; the artist has even depicted tiny dewdrops on the bent grass. On the base the sword fitting maker has signed his name and later, when the...
