A Chinese double overlay snuff bottle. 19th century. An opaque white glass bottle is encased in sapphire blue glass and then encased again in white. These two layers are then cleverly carved away to leave a design of an ancient fisherman attended by his young apprentice. Double overlay bottles are uncommon.

A Chinese “Master of the Rocks” Saucer Dish, Kangxi, late 17th century. Typically, the decoration relies heavily on the techniques of contemporary ink painters with attention to naturalistic detail and various wet brush effects. The border of waterweed-like fronds appears on many such Master of the Rocks ceramics. The back is entirely plain.

Approximately 13.8cm diameter. There is one very shallow chip on the rim, noted in the photographs, otherwise perfect.

The silver gilt appliqué depicts a dancing boy beneath an umbrella formed by a giant branch taken from a peach tree. A deer holding a lingzhi in its mouth and a bat with coin tassels accompanies him. The work is very fine, as you would expect from the late Ming period. The appliqué was intended to be sewn to a costume and therefore is quite delicate and light in weight.

It was not uncommon for blue & white porcelains arriving from the Far East to be applied with enamels to suit the new fashion for coloured wares. The entailed the vessels being fired again but at a much lower temperature. This Dutch production was colloquially known as “Amsterdams Bont”.

The blue & white design on the Arita jar is in Chinese Transitional style.

Approximately 25.3 cm high. As often with these wares there is some crazing to the glaze towards the bottom....
