This diminutive oval box is constructed from the two fittings that normally grace the hilt of a samurai sword, known together as fuchi kashira. The fuchi is the part that fits the hilt next to the hand guard, tsuba, and in this example is iron with soft metal geese and wind-blown grasses. The work is exceptional; the artist has even depicted tiny dewdrops on the bent grass...

The body covered overall with a persimmon slip beneath the clear glaze, the neck dipped in a thick green glaze. The potter has engraved some fruit/vegetable forms through the slip before glazing, something I’ve never seen before. The orange and green go very well together. Within the foot-rim the body is clear glazed giving the more typical oatmeal colouring associated with Seto stoneware...

This fine dish is decorated with designs taken from Ming Chinese Wanli 'Kraak' wares and came about as a result of a disruption of Chinese production during a period of unrest. Dutch traders who found their Chinese trade stopped resorted to ordering from Japanese makers. The Japanese versions of these Kraak style pieces are usually thicker than the very thin Chinese Kraak wares and this has ensured their survival in often pristine condition...

A kensui is a pot in which the water is poured after rinsing a chawan during the tea ceremony. The enamelled design is unusual especially the bold use of iron-red. The base has a variation of the spiral fuku mark, used in the 1780’s. It is uncommon to find ceramics associated with the tea ceremony that can be safely dated to before the 19th century.
