AN UNUSUAL SETO TOKKURI, 19TH CENTURY.

The body covered overall with a persimmon slip beneath the clear glaze, the neck dipped in a thick green glaze. The potter has engraved some fruit/vegetable forms through the slip before glazing, something I’ve never seen before. The orange and green go very well together. Within the foot-rim the body is clear glazed giving the more typical oatmeal colouring associated with Seto stoneware. 19th century.

Approximately 10.3/16 inches (25...

A Japanese baluster vase painted with two scenes, separated by brocaded curtains. The neck in imitation of a cloth cover also featuring two Shimizu mon. The painting is quite remarkable; please remember when you look at the detail photographs that the vase is just a tad under six inches tall. Within the foot-rim is an extensive signature that begins…Satsuma and is followed by two lines, one ending Sei (made) and the other Ga (drew) so this vase might prove to be the work of two artists.

A JAPANESE MIXED METAL BOX, 19TH CENTURY.

This diminutive oval box is constructed from the two fittings that normally grace the hilt of a samurai sword, known together as fuchi kashira. The fuchi is the part that fits the hilt next to the hand guard, tsuba, and in this example is iron with soft metal geese and wind-blown grasses. The work is exceptional; the artist has even depicted tiny dewdrops on the bent grass. On the base the sword fitting maker has signed his name and later, when the...
