A Japanese carved bamboo sake ewer, tokkuri. The pouring spout is a cunning extension of the slim handle, it has a simple stopper. The bung for the filling hole is in the form of a whistle. It is not drilled through so cannot be blown in the usual way but the end is shaped so that a shrill note can be produced when blown across. The top is lacquered red and the top rim ochre.
