A JAPANESE MIXED METAL BOX, 19TH CENTURY.

This diminutive oval box is constructed from the two fittings that normally grace the hilt of a samurai sword, known together as fuchi kashira. The fuchi is the part that fits the hilt next to the hand guard, tsuba, and in this example is iron with soft metal geese and wind-blown grasses.
