A Japanese woodblock print of a kneeling male figure drying a shō, a traditional musical instrument of the reed family, a form of mouth organ, over a brazier. The print is attributed to Kitao Masanobu, 1761~1816 and probably dates to the late 18th century.

A good impression with some gauffrage on the kimono collar. The mount is inscribed in pencil “Mafsanobu”.

A fine and expressive carved stag horn netsuke of Shoki, The Demon Queller. Early 19th century.

Shoki is the Japanese styling of the Chinese spirit Chung Kui who protects households from malevolent demons. In this example the gifted carver shows Shoki studying closely, an off stage, mischievous oni whilst carefully hiding his Chinese sword close to his body.

A Japanese Arita Imari octagonal plate decorated with a lakeside dwelling within a lion-head and diaper border. The use of black enamel foliage is unusual. The cavetto with alternate panels of flowers and gold and red trellis each containing a gilt phoenix on a cobalt ground. The back of the plate has scrolling karakusa and a six-character Chenghua mark. The dish dates from 1700 ~ 1730.

An 18th century Japanese Arita porcelain moulded dish, circa 1750 ~ 1780. The dish with a cavetto moulded with foliage and lotus flowers within a barbed rim. The centre sporting a fine underglaze blue ferocious dragon and pearl amongst coloured clouds. Within the foot-rim is an unusual six-character Yongzheng mark. A dish of this design is illustrated in Shibata, “Complete Catalogue of the Shibata Collection” The Kyushu Ceramic Museum, # 3359.

An 18th century Japanese Arita moulded dish decorated in coloured enamels and gilding. The decoration depicts Manchurian cranes, a symbol of good fortune, amongst the shochikubai, The Three Friends of Winter. The cavetto is moulded with undecorated chrysanthemum heads. Five spur marks appear within the foot-rim.

Soame Jenyns illustrates a slightly larger version of this dish in “Japanese Porcelain” Faber & Faber, 1965, # 45a.

A Japanese baluster vase painted with two scenes, separated by brocaded curtains. The neck in imitation of a cloth cover also featuring two Shimizu mon. The painting is quite remarkable; please remember when you look at the detail photographs that the vase is just a tad under six inches tall. Within the foot-rim is an extensive signature that begins…Satsuma and is followed by two lines, one ending Sei (made) and the other Ga (drew) so this vase might prove to be the work of two artists.

An Islamic silver and turquoise pendant, 19th century. The pendant is formed of two hexagonal cylinders hinged together and held rigid by a swinging suspension loop at the top and a hinged bar at the bottom. The front and sides are encrusted with turquoise stones of circular and gul form, the back is engraved with flowers. No maker's mark.

Approximately 8 cm long. Fine condition though the silver has tarnished with age. This can be cleaned easily.
