A JAPANESE ARITA EWER, 17TH CENTURY.

Shibata illustrates a similar form though with a floral decoration which he dates to 1655 ~ 1670, Impey shows a closer example in ‘Japanese Export Porcelain’ that he dates to the late 17th century. I cannot recall ever seeing one of these ewers with a lid; certainly a lid was never in situ when this ewer was fired as the rim is fully glazed...

AN ATTRACTIVE ARITA TOKKURI, EDO, EARLY 19TH CENTURY.

The pear-shaped porcelain has been paddled before decorating to create four flattened sides on which to paint alternating panels of flowering wisteria and dancing boys.
