A small porcelain dish depicting eccentric stones beyond a terrace in a garden setting. At first this seems to be a very eccentric modern-looking composition but this dish was to be finished with enamel decoration but for an unknown reason it was never completed thus leaving an interesting artifact. The base with an apocryphal four-character Ming reign mark for Jiajing.

Arita, 1690 - 1700.

A Japanese export porcelain Kendi, late 17th century.

Professor Jorg devotes a chapter to the kendi in his “Fine & Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections” Hotei Publishing, 2003. The shape is based on the Indian kundika, a vessel used in ritual. Most Japanese kendi were exported to S.E. Asia, those sent to Holland appear to be used decoratively.

This ribbed form of the kendi is possibly based on a Chinese Swatow example. It is decorated with a garden scen...

A Leica IIf from 1953, Nr. 653684. This is the latter red dial version. Good overall condition with some light wear from careful use. Some very minor bright marks on the top plate. The shutter fires at all speeds and sounds correct although I don’t have a way of testing it accurately. The viewfinder is clear and the rangefinder image is good. An attractive clean example.

I have owned this fine Polynesian carved wooden club from Samoa for many years, I have always loved the way that it has remained undamaged and has avoided being over cleaned. A long time ago a former owner has fitted a hook for suspension and it is perhaps this that has preserved it so well.

The patterns on the surface are filled with lime and this inlay is mostly intact. The original fine cuts made when scribing the patterns are still visible. Overall the club is in fine undamaged condit...

It was not uncommon for blue & white porcelains arriving from the Far East to be applied with enamels to suit the new fashion for coloured wares. The entailed the vessels being fired again but at a much lower temperature. This Dutch production was colloquially known as “Amsterdams Bont”.

The blue & white design on the Arita jar is in Chinese Transitional style.

The stone has a lustrous patina and has a very dramatic ‘splash’ of red on both sides. It has never been carved with a designation and the base has now a shallow flake as a result of an impact on the edge, with a little powdery material showing. Further along there is a tiny bruise to the edge. These could be taken out by reducing the length by 0.4cm. Personally the chip does not worry me. In this example the red is really very strong, like a fashionable lipstick.
