A Japanese porcelain dish with a barbed edge and cavetto moulded with Buddhist symbols. The centre painted with underglaze blue depicting two scholars playing chess in an idyllic setting, a waterfall behind them and a stanza of Chinese poetry above them.

Arita, circa 1780 ~ 1800.

Approximately 21cm diameter. Perfect condition.
