A Japanese Transverse Flute, Nohkan, and associated Fan. The nohkan is used in the performance of Noh and Kabuki theatre. During a performance the flautist is always dressed formally, the attire based on Court dress which includes a fan.
The flute is made from bound and lacquered bamboo and has a little decoration of a ginko leaf at the closed end. The construction of these flutes is complex and is well-reported on the internet. The flute has a black lacquered sleeve case and both case and flute have a brocade cover.
The folding fan has alternating panels of silver and deep blue supported on bamboo staves. It has an inscription on the inner surface of the first stave, this repeated on the flap if the brocade bag.
The flute is approximately 38.8 cm long and is in fine condition. The lacquer sleeve has sustained a little trauma to the end and this has now been re-glued. The brocade bag is in good condition.
The fan is approximately 29 cm long and 51 cm when fully opened. The condition is good.
