A Japanese gold lacquer kagamibako, a box for a small circular mirror. This example is from the 18th century or perhaps earlier. The top features a landscape which is continued in places down the side, the inside and base lacquered with nashiji powdered gold. Inside the lid is a fabulous landscape with a flowing river and flowering trees and a stunted pine near the bottom of the scene.
Approximately 10.7 cm diameter. The condition is very good considering the great age, some wear on top, noted also a tiny indent. The base with light wear as expected and signs of careful use.
