A Korean inlaid low table used at the Royal Palace, late 19th century, the top decorated with a dragon and a pheonix representing King and Queen inlaid with shargreen, mother of pearl, and tortoiseshell. Apron shaped edge under the top inlaid with four Chinese characters of chung, shin, hyo, je (loyalty, piety, faith and love one's brother) and auspicious objects with shargreen, on square legs and club feet. Measured at W 102 cm D 70cm and H 42 cm. Excellent condition.

The two peonies inlaid top and front are vividly rendered in full bloom, surrounded by buds and tendrils. Twisted brass wires are used to link up the blooms to form a neat plant. Not only are the individual decorative units a great deal larger and bold but the décor still leaves some blank areas, allowing the individual motifs to stand out to much better effect and creating a feeling of greater overall generosity. This large square box was probably used for the storage valuables, along with a number of clothing boxes and chests it would have formed part of a bride’s trousseau. Decorated with auspicious symbols, the character for long life occupies a central medallion on the lid and is surrounded with four cranes and heavenly peaches. Square reserves on each side of the box contain cranes beneath winter plum blossom tree, peonies with pheasant and bamboo tree with flying birds...

This elegant small box contains a mirror hinged to the top panel which faces down when the box is closed. Lady’s accessories can be found at the inside of front drawer. The entire top and front part is covered with a geometrical pattern painstakingly inlaid with narrow strip of mother of pearl, which represents the high techniques of Korean lacquer ware in the late Joseon period.
