Woodblock print by Earl M. Washington, after a print by Eric Gill, the noted British artist and printmaker (1882-1940). Print paper size 5 3/8" x 8 7/8", woodblock size 3 1/4" x 5", mat 13 1/2" x 11". Matted in white boards with glassine over image, print tipped in with small piece of tape. Paper is cream colored, with strong black impression. Signed by Washington, 1 of 15 images, and attributed to E. Gill, dated 1927, obviously done when he was attributing these prints to an alleged relative. Good condition, some slight smudges to margin of print, but no wear to surface or fading. Edges a tad browned, was likely stored with non archival materials at some time. A compelling image, simple and evocative, of reclining woman holding another person in her arms. Earl Marshawn Washington, born in 1962, began printing a variety of woodblock prints in the 1990's attributing them to his grandfather, Earl Mack Washington (1862-1952). Until he was found to be the maker of the prints, many sold as original art by an unknown and very talented African American artist. After investigation, Washington admitted that he was the printmaker and his story about his alleged grandfather was a fabrication. Once he took credit and responsibility for the story and for the work, the prints became collectible, and are now offered by major galleries and dealers of fine prints, especially for their African American themes and very stylized and artistic images.
