Dating to the 19th century, this silver and bone baby rattle has attached silver bells, a whistle at one end, and a bone handle on the other end. Of Chinese export silver, it has a hallmark near the handle, what appears to be *SM in a rectangular cartouche. The first figure is worn, unable to see, but may have been a lion's head, as was utilized in Great Britain and many colonies (the mark is shown in the fourth photo, where the rattle is upright with the handle at the top)...

With engraved designs of bats and other symbols, the surface of this box is stipled over most of the surface and has applied corners, medallions, and a central rectangular leaf design in silver. The interior is wood lined, and the lid fits snugly, so it was likely a humidor or cigar case. It is nice heavy weight, and measures 11/3/4" x 6 5/8" x 2 1/2", with a simple latch closure...
