Carved and etched with very elaborate and precise detail, this gourd measures 4 3/4" high, the mouth 2 1/8" in diameter. Of walrus ivory, this sculpture depicts a polar bear family, three in front, and one head in back, over a carving of a caribou in back, and a relief carving of a seal in front. The walrus ivory measures roughly 2 5/8" high x 1 5/8" wide on a soapstone base roughly 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" and the two pieces were held together with a peg. Modeled with blackware clay, this seated figure depicts a man with folded arms, a cape, and wearing a four cornered pointed hat. It measures 6 3/4" to the top of the spout, which has losses to the rim, visible in photos. The vessel is intact, and retains some remnants of soil from burial, and has visible lines on surface from age, and one small section on left side of head where a tiny chip has occurred.
