By noted South African artist, Otto Klar (born in Austria, 1908-1994), this drawing depicts a group of huts, some figures, and hills in the background. In a simple wood frame, it measures 10 3/4" by 12 5/8" (sight size 6" by 8"), and is inscribed on the back, "Christmas South Africa, 1977, Gift from Otto Klar, Dec 2nd". In pencil, on buff colored paper, frame and double matting are clearly original, and the drawing appears to be in excellent condition. Otto Klar was born in Austria, attended the Vienna Academy of Arts, and moved to South Africa in 1939, where he taught in Pretoria and became well recognized for his landscape paintings throughout the region. His landscapes are highly prized for their detailed and fine portrayal of the geography and cultures of South Africa.
