Each beautifully carved from a single piece of walnut, these Santos retain most of the original gesso, gilding, and paint. They both measure 13 3/8" by 6", and one has loss of wood at the base, and the other at the top, behind the head, and at the waist(all visible in photos); other than these sections, they are in remarkably good condition. One Santo holds a palm frond, a symbol of martyrdom, and could represent St. John or St. Paul, and the other appears to be St. Anthony, holding the Baby Jesus who stands upon the Bible. Well carved, with good detail, the gilding over the gesso and red lacquered base creates a rich surface which contrasts well against the more subtly colored painted background. Certainly Continental in origin, they are likely Austrian, German, or Italian. Dating to the 18th Century, and possibly earlier, these sculptures are timeless in their beauty and serenity.
