Measuring 24" high (61 cms), this carving of a laughing Buddha, often called Pu-tai for the legendary figure, is dramatic and appealing, with elaborate carving, figures, and a beautiful, satiny, aged patina. The figure represents joy, abundance, good fortune, and according to legend, carries candy for the children who flock to him. He gazes at the wealth ball in his left hand, a symbol of prosperity, and wears a necklace of beads. The wood is very dense and hard, and has a lovely grain with darker, fluid lines. In excellent condition, with no losses, and an old age crack visible on the back. The base is quite dark, with evidence of age and wear. Dates to the 19th century at least, and is possibly earlier.
