The Tairona culture existed between several hundred years BC and approximately 1500AD in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in what is now Colombia, South America, leaving a fine heritage of beautifully crafted objects, from pottery to fine gold sculpture. This urn has a nicely molded face and arms, on a globular body and raised neck, measuring approximately 10" high and 12" across, the neck just over 6" across. In good condition, with remnants of encrusted sand, a fine crack at the neck, one along the side, one on the base, and a chip at the back of the rim. The base has evidence of wear and mineral deposits. It sits slightly lopsided, and is more stable and upright if placed upon a ring of some kind. There is an old paper collection label on the interior neck, and is from a collection of pre-Columbian artifacts acquired before 1970
