Pal Kepenyes, a long time resident of Acapulco Mexico, is a world renowned artist, sculptor, and jewelry designer known for his fanciful, unique, surreal, and sometimes outrageous designs. Originally from Hungary, he spent time in prison there for his opposition to the communist regime, and after briefly relocating to Paris, he emigrated to Mexico, where he has lived and worked since the late 1950's. His sculptures are in museums and collections around the world, his quirky jewelry is highly sought after, and he has been referred to as the "Picasso of Mexico". This brass Giraffe measures 12 1/2" high, and 9 3/4" long. Comprised of varying pieces of brass, each with a face or design, the giraffe stands with legs and neck outstretched, a whimsical form that is enhanced by the reticulated sections and high relief of the designs. The eyes are inset glass, and the signature is on the right side of the giraffe, just below a rectangular section featuring the fabled plumed serpent of Mexico, Quetzalcoatl.
