In remarkably fine condition, this carved ivory brise fan with double sided painting retains its original lacquer box with glass covered section holding fan, and is complete, with silk tassel remaining. The finely painted scenes on each side feature both figures and landscapes, with small vignettes painted in bottom border, and each face is inlaid with ivory and then painted. Gold strips surround the painted scenes, as well as decorated borders. The ivory guard sticks are very thick, and deeply carved with figures, dwellings, foliate and floral designs, and the brise sticks are finely carved in intricate floral and geometric designs. The brass handle retains some gilding, and is nicely decorated with repousse designs, while the hinge is set on both sides with a cut gem. The fan measures 20" wide when open, the guardsticks are 10 7/8" (ivory section only), and 11 1/4" including handle. The lacquer box is finely decorated in gold upon dark lacquer and is also painted on the interior lid, lined with silk, and measures 13 1/8" long, 3 7/8" side, and 3' high. The box has a few minor losses of lacquer and some light scratches to the lid. Additional photos are available upon request. Rarely found in such beautiful condition, this fan is the finest quality, a true collector's gem. Ca 1840.
