In excellent condition, this seated Chorrera figure measures 8 1/2" high, 5" wide, and 4 1/4" deep. It features a red helmet-like headdress, incised decoration around the torso, and large ear ornaments. The eyes are typically puffy with slits, and the nose is prominent and curved. The body is burnished, with both red and buff pigments, and there is a large hole in the back of the headdress. The short, rounded limbs are typical of Chorrera figures, and this one is finely proportioned and sculpted. From what is now the country of Ecuador, the Chorrera culture was early, dating from approximately 1500 to 500 BC.
