A hand colored copper plate engraving titled "a view from the sea of the town of Cananoor on the Malabar Coast" from "Historie des Voyages" (A. F. Prevost d'exile), 1761, signed in the lower left corner, J. V. Schley. This image is from the Dutch edition and has additional information in Dutch penciled along the bottom. The sheet measures roughly 9" by 12" and has three fold lines, though the third (on the right) does not seem to have ever been folded. A good clear impression on heavy wove paper, with some slight yellowing and foxing, and very good color, this print depicts a variety of ships in the harbor, some of which fly the Dutch flag and are likely part of the fleet of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), very active in India at the time, and for many years. The red tile roofs of the town and industry cover much of the waterfront, with green hills and fields in the back ground.
