By the French artist, Carle Vernet (1758-1836), this lithograph depicts two horses fighting, with other horses in the background, in a rural landscape. Vernet was an accomplished artist, often depicting historical scenes, and his images of horses are dynamic and beautifully rendered. On heavy buff paper, measuring 17 3/4" by 24 3/4", the lithograph is signed in the image, and was published by L. Turgis, of Paris, a well known publisher of historical and genre prints of the era. The entire sheet is toned, with some foxing and very slight wear to edges, and the image area is darkened, likely as a result of exposure to light where mat did not cover. Undated, it is mid 19th century. Unframed. Will ship flat, between sections of foam board.
