Of gilt bronze, this fine snuff box is likely a master or table snuff box, as its dimensions are larger than one usually carried in a pocket. It measures 3 1/16" x 2 3/8" across the lid, and is 1 1/2" high. The base is slightly smaller, as the lid overlaps and fits tightly on the base. The scene on top depicts a man seated in a chair, surrounded by others, including a man in Chinese clothing. It appears that the man in the chair has his arm over a keg, and seems to be a bit tipsy. The scenes on the sides, and on the front and back include a basket with grapes and leaves, and a seated woman, surrounded by grapes and vines, with her skirt piled with grapes. The base has a crest, and some initials scratched into the metal, and there are no hallmarks or other identification visible. The metal work is very fine, with good detail, and resembles that of fine silver work from the Georgian era, and has the elaborate flourishes of Rococo design. Excellent condition, with some wear to the gilt, particularly on the bottom.
