This elaborately designed hammer was originally patented on September 17, 1901 by C.T. Hennig, and described in detail, with attached drawings. In 1928, the same design was patented by Mitteldorfer Straus. The hammer measures 7 1/2" x 4 1/2" and appears to be brass or bronze with a heavy plated surface. In good condition, there is some plating loss on both ends of the hammer head, visible in photos. Sugar hammers were utilized in commercial establishments and in the home before granulated sugar was produced, and this item was obviously designed for its elegance and fine dining location.
