Measuring 5 1/8" high and 3 3/8" diameter on at top, and 4 1/4" at widest point, this cloisonne lidded box or jar was likely a tea caddy or tobacco box. With elaborate designs, all done in rich colors, some in gradated tones, with fine brass wires, the box is high quality, over a heavy brass base. Fanciful peacocks are depicted on two sides, all over a background of deep red and dark blue scrolled motifs. The lid is decorated with floral designs, lotus shapes, with additional scrolling elements. In excellent condition, no chips or cracks, some small pitting from firing, with good rich color throughout the surface. Dates to late 19th century or early 20th.
