Of large size, 15 1/4" length, 7 3/8" high, and 7" deep, and quite heavy (10 pounds, 8 ounces), this dramatic inkstand features two winged dragons surrounding a central font with lions paws feet and grotesque faces on the the front and back of the font. Executed in the Renaissance Revival style, the stand is very well cast, with good detail in high relief and incised into the surface. Unsigned, it dates to the mid 19th century and is likely French, or Continental in origin. The base stands upon graceful feet, and the pen tray has a lovely floral, foliate and urn motif in high relief. Excellent condition, no scrapes, dents, or losses, some slight areas of verdigris visible. Beautifully designed and crafted, this desk inkstand would grace and enhance an elaborate desk, from Renaissance to Victorian eras.
