Measuring 7 1/4" wide, 4 1'2" high, and 5" deep, this bronze inkwell features the head of a lion or other big cat, and has applied glass eyes. The patina is dark, with lighter tones where it has been handled and rubbed. The piece is cast in three pieces, the head having a hinged lid, and is fastened to the back of the base with screws. It is unsigned, but is of exceptionally high quality in the casting of the head, with nice detail and texture. The front section contains the pen tray and sits directly on a desk or table, and there are two feet in the back. Elaborate inkwells were common in the 19th century, and figural forms are highly desirable, with such bronzes as this among the finest.
