This large ceramic rooster (16 1/4")is the work of Edwin Meaders (1921-2015) of the famous Meader family of potters and artists from White County Georgia. John Meader founded the workshop in 1893, primarily making utilitarian jugs, crocks, and other functional items. Cheever and Arie Meaders continued the work, making both utilitarian objects and creating artworks in the shape of animals, birds, and face jugs. Lanier Meaders is Edwin's brother, and is famous for his face jugs, many with elaborate forms and applied details. Edwin was influenced by his mother's interest in bird forms, and focused on roosters, creating animated forms with rich and lush glazes. This rooster was made in 1991 and shows the good detail, but especially the richness of the glaze. It flows into subtle coloration, with a surface that is nicely textured and varied. From all sides this Rooster is well modeled, and has great presence.
