Heavy bronze (2 pounds), this censer measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/4 x about 2 1/2" high and has a very deep rich patina, which has worn away in areas where it has been handled (mostly on the leaves, where the bronze appears reddish), and on the base, with yellow bronze showing. The form is an eggplant or aubergine, with attached stem, leaves, and small eggplants. Unsigned, it likely dates to the late Qing era, and has evidence of use. It is a lovely, simple form, suitable for use as an incense burner, a desk receptacle, or just an artful sculptural item.
