Measuring 6" high, and 10 3/8" wide, this is a remarkably well sculpted image of a lion, functioning as an inkwell or inkstand.
The recumbent lion has wonderful detail, and clearly portrays the regal posture of the legendary King of the Beasts.
It is on an oval base, with a shell protruding from the front with a fanciful face of another cat like creature.
Of very heavy weight bronze (weighs 7 1/2 pounds).
The base sits on three round feet, and is a much darker color that the rest of the inkwell, and shows details of handwork.
It is unsigned, but likely French, late 19th century.
The head lifts to show the area where the ink would be stored (no glass or ceramic liner).
There are spots on the surface that may be dirt or tarnish, and it has not been cleaned.
The bronze work is exceptional, similar to the kinds of quality seen in the animalier sculptures by French artists.
This is the finest figural inkwell that we have ever had, and is a stunning piece of sculpture.
Though its purpose is an inkwell, it stands alone as a beautiful sculpture, and would enhance any desk or table with its presence.
