This photo by Gordon C. Abbott (1882-1951), is a silver gelatin print, measuring 9 5/8" x 11 5/8", mounted on a mat, with a signature below the right bottom corner of the photo. The framed section measures 16 3/4" x 15 1/4".
The scene depicts women and children doing laundry in a village, with the mountains in the background.
Abbott spent many years in Mexico and Guatemala, photographing the details of daily life there, and scenes of the countryside, the landscape, and other aspects of the culture and environment. His emphasis was upon the lives of the people there, and the simple beauty that he found in the most ordinary of places and things.
His works are many private collections, as well as in museums and other institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Museum.
This image is a silver gelatin print, in good condition, though it has come loose from the mat. The mat has a water stain in the lower left hand corner, visible in photos. Please note that the images here have some reflection from lights, and a white reflection seen in the lower right corner.
Prints by Abbot are desirable, as he was one of the early photographers who dealt in such realistic views of people and their surroundings, finding great artistic expression and beauty in basic themes.
