Exceptional quality and large size, this carved marble lamb measures 5 7/8" high, with a base of 8 1/4" x 5 1/8". It is substantial, weighing 9 pounds and 12 ounces.
The detailing of the lamb's fur, face and overall form is excellent, with a nicely beveled base.
In very good condition, with expected surface wear and ears all intact, which is rare. It has some dirt and light staining, and we have not cleaned the surface nor removed any of the residue from recessed areas.
Possibly Vermont marble, as it was often used for sculpture and memorial items during the 19th century.
Sometimes these figures represent the Lamb of God, and were also carved as memorials, especially for children.
Often considered American folk art, this lamb was carved by a very skilled craftsman.
Carved from one solid piece of marble, it is well proportioned and all sides are finished and attractive.
Note, some of the photos have a slight yellowish tint to the marble, which is not the case. It is white, with some darkened spots and dirt.
