Bronze incense burner in form of Foo Lion or Dog, with removable head. Measures 6 1/4" high, 4" wide, and 2 3/4" wide. An early bronze, dates to early Qing and possibly late Ming. Dark patina, with much oxidation and variation in color to surface. Lighter bronze evident on bottoms of feet and where it has been handled. Incised details on tail and legs, with swirling cloud or wave motif on body and head. As is the nature of these Foo Lions, this one has a fierce expression, all to protect from evil spirits or intruders. Head mounts to body with a flange that fits into slot in body, and is sturdy. There is some surface dirt in recessed areas, and is more visible on tail, where it has not been handled. No losses or cracks, suitable to use as a censer or just appreciate as a fine Chinese sculptural object.
