This sculpture of an African American man is beautifully sculpted, in a style reminiscent of early 20th century artists who were inspired by the stylized forms of African traditional art. Good size, it measures 10 1/2" high, and the base is 6 3/4" in diameter, and is a heavy wood, possibly maple or walnut. There is a very dark finish, some of which has been cleaned off, and in areas where it was handled, there is wear to the finish. In good condition, some loss to the base around the neck area, but the head is in great condition, just the surface wear mentioned. The scalp area is decorated with impressed marks to simulate hair, with a few other marks and areas where natural wood grain is visible. Please see all photos for details. A really exception piece of American folk art, this sculpture is a fine example of the artist's vision and skill. Has very good age, appears to be late 19th century.
